Samanta
Feminine
Samanta is Samantha without its h, which is how Italian and Spanish write the name — neither language uses th as a single sound, so the letter serves no purpose there. It became a standard name in Italy, Spain and Latin America in the late twentieth century, and its American record follows those communities rather than the English-language Samantha curve. Its peak here is 2000.

The story of Samanta
The English-language name is first visible in American records around 1780 and stayed a distinctly American name until the twentieth century. Its great expansion came in 1964, when the television series Bewitched gave its central character the name and made it internationally familiar within a season; American use rose more than tenfold in five years. Italy and Spain took it up in the following decades and dropped the h, because Italian has no th sound and Spanish does not use the digraph. Samanta is therefore not a respelling in the American sense but a naturalization, and it is the standard form of the name in two large languages.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Samantha's origin has never been settled, which is unusual for a name this common. It appears in American records from the late eighteenth century, particularly in the South, with no European precedent. The most cited proposal makes it a feminine of Samuel with an -antha ending borrowed from Greek anthos, 'flower', on the model of Anthea and Chrysantha. Others suggest an Aramaic or a Hebrew source, but none is documented. The honest position is that Samantha is an early American formation of unknown construction, and Samanta inherits that.

Pronouncing Samanta
sah-MAHN-tah
Three syllables, stress in the middle, with open vowels in Italian and Spanish. English speakers say suh-MAN-thuh, reintroducing the th sound that the spelling removes; both are heard on American bearers and neither is wrong for the language it belongs to.
