Ryen
Masculine · “Irish ri”
Ryen is given to both — 1,332 boys and 1,059 girls since 1880. See Ryen as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Ireland had about a hundred and fifty kings at once. A ri ruled a tuath, a people of a few thousand, and above him were over-kings and provincial kings. The word behind Ryan probably contains it, which makes the name much smaller than it sounds.

The story of Ryen
Early Irish society was organized into perhaps a hundred and fifty tuatha, each a people of a few thousand with its own ri, and the word ri is the same as Latin rex and Gaulish rix. Above the ri of a tuath stood a ruiri, an over-king with several tuatha under him, and above that a ri ruirech, a king of over-kings, roughly a provincial ruler. The high king at Tara was a claim rather than an office for most of the period. So a ri was closer to a chieftain of a district than to a monarch of a country, and the Irish legal tracts define his rights and obligations in detail, including how many clients he must have. Any Irish name meaning king should be read against that scale, which is why the diminutive in Rian is not necessarily modest.

Irish ri, king
Ryen is a respelling of Ryan, from Irish O Riain, descendant of Rian. The personal name Rian is usually connected to ri, a king, with a diminutive ending, giving little king, though the derivation is not certain and other sources have been proposed. The peak of this spelling is 2005.

The Cuauhtemoc test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ryen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cuauhtemoc climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cuauhtemoc's path sketches the road Ryen is walking now.
Ryen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
