The story of Ryen
Ryan became one of the largest American boys' names of the 1970s and 1980s, and it began appearing for girls in the 1980s in the general movement of Irish surnames across the sex line. Once there, it needed a spelling that marked the difference, and American English supplied the same solution it uses for Jordan and Jordyn, Cameron and Camryn, Kyle and Kylie: change a vowel that carries no sound. Ryen, Ryann, Ryanne and Ryen all appear in the female column in those years, and Ryen peaked in 2005.

Irish "descendant of Rían", of uncertain meaning
Ryan comes from the Irish surname Ó Riain. The personal name Rían behind it is usually connected to rí, king, with a diminutive ending, giving something like little king — but that derivation is not certain and other readings have been proposed. The surname is well documented; the meaning under it is not settled.

Two syllables with the stress on the first and the second vowel fully reduced — which is precisely why the a and e spellings sound identical. Irish gives REE-an, with a different first vowel entirely.
