The story of Rudi
Robert L. May worked in the advertising department of Montgomery Ward in Chicago and was asked in 1939 to write a Christmas story the store could give to shoppers instead of buying coloring books. He produced Rudolph, in verse, about a reindeer whose defect turns out to be useful. The store distributed two and a half million copies that year and over three and a half million in 1946. May got the copyright back in 1947, and his brother-in-law Johnny Marks set the story to music in 1949, when Gene Autry's recording became one of the best-selling singles of all time. So a figure now inseparable from Christmas was created as a giveaway to save a retailer money on promotional stock, and the name attached to him was chosen by a copywriter who had also considered Rollo and Reginald.
