Ruddy
Masculine · “Germanic hrod and wulf”
Ruddy is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 536 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
In Britain ruddy is a swear word, or rather a way of avoiding one: a softened form of bloody, used exactly where an American would say darn. Anywhere in the Commonwealth the name is heard as mild profanity. In the United States it is simply an adjective about complexion, which is why the name survived here and nowhere else.

The story of Ruddy
The wolf element is one of the three most common in Germanic naming, alongside bear and boar, and it is the least euphemistic of them: where the bear was renamed out of taboo, the wolf kept its own word. Wulf appears at the front of Wolfgang and Wulfstan and at the back of Rudolph, Randolph, Adolph and Arnulf, and English Beowulf may be a kenning meaning bee-wolf, that is, a bear. What happened to these names in the twentieth century is a study in how quickly a name can be destroyed: Adolph, a top-hundred American boys' name in 1910, is effectively gone by 1945. Rudolph survived, partly on the strength of a 1939 advertising poem about a reindeer that became a song in 1949, which fixed it as a children's name and dated it permanently.

Germanic hrod and wulf, fame and wolf
Ruddy is usually a respelling of Rudy, the short form of Rudolph, from the Germanic elements hrod, fame or glory, and wulf, wolf. It is separately an English word meaning red-faced or healthy-looking, from Old English rudig, and a surname. Which of these lies behind a given American bearer is not recoverable, and the 1944 peak sits alongside Rudy and Rudolph rather than with word names.

About 1 boy in 4,604 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 189,786 for Ruddy itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Cloud test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ruddy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cloud climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cloud's path sketches the road Ruddy is walking now.
