Where it comes from

The story of Ronel

Regin in Old Norse means the ruling powers, and by extension the gods; it appears in Ragnarok, the doom or fate of the gods, and in the name of the smith Regin in the Volsung story. Rognvaldr therefore says something like one who rules with the counsel of the gods, and it was a name of Norse earls of Orkney and of kings in the Isles. Norse settlement carried it into Scotland, where Gaelic took it as Raghnall and English as Ronald and Ranald; the same name reached Ireland as Raghnall and England as Reynold and Reginald, which look unrelated and are not. The clipping Ron detached in the twentieth century and became a name and then a suffix, which is where the -ron of Deron and Jayron comes from. The chain from a Norse divine council to an American naming syllable is unbroken.

Norse regin and valdr, the gods and ruler

Ronel joins Ron, a clipping of Ronald, to the -el ending, a French diminutive absorbed into English surnames. Ronald is from Old Norse Rognvaldr, joining regin, the gods or the ruling powers, to valdr, a ruler. Ronel is also a Haitian and Afrikaans name. The American peak is 1941.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ronel went to 7 boys in 2025, but Ronell and Ronnell are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 21, which makes it the 907th most-given boys’ name of the year — 8,807 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 81,337 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Ronel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
