Where it comes from

The story of Ronnell

Norse rule in Scotland lasted longer than most people expect: Orkney and Shetland were Norwegian until 1468, the Hebrides until 1266, and the earls of Orkney were among the most powerful figures in the north. Their names went into Gaelic and stayed: Ranald and Ronald from Rognvaldr, Torquil from Thorkell, Somerled from Sumarlidi, the summer traveler, which became the surname MacSorley and the clan Donald's founding name. Ronald therefore looks Scottish and is Scandinavian, arriving by sea rather than through England, where the same Norse name gave Reynold by a different route through Normandy. The American Ronnell attaches the productive -ell ending to the clipped form.

Meaning

Norse ragin and valdr, counsel-ruler

Ronnell joins Ron, from Ronald, to the -ell ending. Ronald is the Scottish form of Old Norse Rognvaldr, from ragin, counsel or judgment, and valdr, ruler; the same elements give Reynold and Reginald. The peak is 1971.

Ronnell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 64 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ronnell went to 6 boys in 2025, but Ronell and Ronel are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 21, which makes it the 907th most-given boys’ name of the year — 9,788 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 81,337 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Ronnell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
