Ridhi
Feminine · “prosperity”
Ridhi is a Sanskrit abstract noun for prosperity, and in Hindu tradition it is also a person: Riddhi and Siddhi are the two consorts of Ganesha, prosperity and attainment paired together. That pairing is why the name is often given alongside a sister called Siddhi, and why it carries a specific and cheerful sense rather than a vague one. Its American record is small and recent.

The story of Ridhi
Ganesha's iconography usually shows him with two attendant figures, and by the later Puranic period they were named Riddhi and Siddhi — prosperity and success, the two things a household asks of him. Naming daughters for these qualities is an old and living practice in western and northern India, particularly in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. The name traveled with Indian migration to East Africa, Britain, Canada and the United States through the twentieth century. American birth records carry it in small numbers with a recent peak, tracking the growth of South Asian communities rather than any English-language fashion.
Meaning
prosperity, growth, abundance
Sanskrit riddhi is built on the root rdh, 'to grow, to prosper, to succeed'. It names material and spiritual increase together — the word is used of wealth, of good fortune and of the supernormal powers attained through practice. In the Ganesha tradition Riddhi is personified as one of his two wives, the other being Siddhi, 'accomplishment'. The derivation is settled and the word is still current in Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi.

Pronouncing Ridhi
RID-hee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The dh is a single aspirated consonant in Sanskrit and Hindi rather than a d followed by an h, which English speakers approximate by saying the d with a puff of breath. Saying it as a plain RID-ee is close enough to be understood everywhere.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Gwynneth test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ridhi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gwynneth climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gwynneth's path sketches the road Ridhi is walking now.
Ridhi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- Riddhi and Ridhi are both standard transliterations, so records will drift.
- The aspirated dh has no English equivalent and will be flattened.
- It is rare in the United States and will be spelled out routinely.
