Where it comes from

The story of Riddhi

Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings, and the tradition gives him Riddhi and Siddhi as wives, personifications of the two things a successful undertaking requires — the prosperity to sustain it and the skill to complete it. The words are old Sanskrit and appear well before the personification. As a given name Riddhi is modern, ordinary among Gujarati, Marathi and Hindi-speaking families, and often paired with a sister named Siddhi. American records show it from the 1990s with Indian migration and a peak in 2007.

Meaning

Prosperity, growth, abundance

From Sanskrit ṛddhi, growth, increase or prosperity, from a root meaning to thrive. The reading is settled. Riddhi and Siddhi — prosperity and attainment — are named as Ganesha's consorts in the Puranas, and the pairing is standard in devotional usage. The doubled d in transliteration marks a retroflex consonant rather than a length.

Pronouncing Riddhi

Two syllables, stress on the first. The Sanskrit ṛ is a vowel r and the ddh is a doubled aspirated retroflex; English produces neither and settles on a plain d.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Riddhi went to 22 girls in 2025, but Ridhi is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 43, which makes it the 917th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,637 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 37,378 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 73,058 for Riddhi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, concrete and pleasant.
  • Six letters and two syllables keep it compact.
  • It has a documented place in Hindu tradition.
What to consider
  • The consonant cluster is unusual in English and will be simplified.
  • Riddhi, Ridhi and Rhiddhi are all in transliteration use.
  • It is unfamiliar outside Indian communities.
