The story of Reginae
The settlement on Wascana Creek was named Pile of Bones, a translation of the Cree oskana ka-asasteki, for the buffalo bones stacked there by hunters over many years. In 1882 the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the site and it was chosen as capital of the North-West Territories, a decision that needed a more dignified name. Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the governor general, supplied Regina, for her mother. The creek kept its Cree name. The episode is a compact history of nineteenth-century western settlement: an indigenous descriptive name recording an ecological fact, replaced by a Latin honorific for a monarch four thousand miles away, at the moment a railway arrived. The bison population that produced the bones was effectively gone within a decade of the renaming.
Meaning
Latin regina, queen
Reginae is a respelling of Regina, Latin for queen, the feminine of rex. It is used as a Marian title, Regina Caeli, Queen of Heaven, and became a given name through that devotion. The -ae ending is Latin for the genitive and plural but is used here as an American spelling variant. The peak is 2010.
