Rayhan in Arabic covers sweet basil and fragrant plants generally, and it appears in the Quran in sura al-Rahman among the good things of the garden, alongside grain and date palms. As a personal name Rayhana is old; a woman of that name appears in the earliest Islamic sources. The plant itself has collected honorifics in several languages. Greek called it basilikon, the royal herb, from basileus, a king, which is where English basil comes from and which makes the plant and the name Basil the same word. Indian tradition treats holy basil, tulsi, as sacred to Vishnu and plants it in courtyards. In Europe it acquired a set of contradictory associations, funerary in Greece and amorous in Italy. Very few plants have been so consistently thought significant.
