Our story of Raudel
Our reading is that Spanish-language coinage deserves the same treatment English-language coinage gets, and it rarely receives it. The assumption in most reference works is that a Spanish name must descend from a saint, a Latin word or an Indigenous language, and when none of those fits, an etymology is invented rather than the possibility of invention being admitted. But Mexico in the twentieth century did exactly what the United States did: families made names, often on a small set of endings, often circulating regionally before spreading. The -el ending is one of the productive ones, and so are -ely, -eth and the Y- initial. These names have no meanings because they were not made from words, and saying so is more respectful of the tradition than attaching a fabricated Nahuatl gloss to it. Raudel is one of them, and its history is a Mexican one.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Raudel has no established etymology. It is sometimes explained as a variant of Rodolfo or as containing raudo, Spanish for swift, but neither connection is documented. The name appears in Mexican records through the twentieth century and reaches the United States with Mexican migration, peaking in 1989. It should be treated as a modern Spanish-language formation of unknown construction.

row-DEL
Two syllables, stress on the second, with the au as a single diphthong like the ow of how. English speakers sometimes say RAW-del, treating au as the vowel of caught, which Spanish does not.
