Where it comes from

The story of Blue

Ancient Greek has no word for blue as English uses it — Homer's sea is wine-dark — and linguists have found that blue is the last basic color term languages acquire, after black, white, red, green and yellow. English borrowed its word from French. Blue entered American given-name use recently and is in current use.

Meaning

the color blue

From the Old French bleu, from a Frankish root, which displaced the Old English hæwen and blaw. Blue is famously the last basic color term to appear in most languages, and Homer never uses one. The etymology is documented.

What to consider
  • It is an ordinary English adjective with a strong emotional sense.
  • It is used for both sexes.
  • It is very new as a given name.
