The ch in Rachel is a mistake English inherited. The Hebrew has a throat sound written het; Greek and Latin transliterated it ch; English then read that ch the way it reads church. Rashel writes the sound English actually produces, which is neither.

Where it comes from

The story of Rashel

Greek had no letter for the Hebrew het and used chi, which Latin wrote ch, and that convention passed into every European language. What each language then did with the ch depended on its own habits. Spanish said it as an h or dropped it, which is why Raquel is the Spanish form and why Rashel appears as a phonetic respelling. German kept a throat sound close to the original. English, which had no such sound at all, read ch as either k, in Christ and chorus, or as the ch of church, and Rachel got the second. So English speakers say a name with a sound that was never in the Hebrew, arrived through Greek and Latin spelling, and was then reinterpreted by English reading rules. Rashel is what happens when a speller writes the actual result instead of the inherited spelling.

Meaning

Hebrew rachel, a ewe

Rashel is a Spanish and American respelling of Rachel, Hebrew rachel, a ewe or female sheep. The middle consonant in Hebrew is het, a sound made in the throat that English does not have; the ch of the standard spelling is a Latin transliteration convention, not an instruction to say the ch of church. The peak of this spelling is 2000.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Rashel went to 10 girls in 2025, but Rashell is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 40, which makes it the 920th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,537 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 40,182 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Rashel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling matches the sound it is written for.
  • Rachel and Raquel are both available as standard forms.
  • The stressed ending gives it a firm final beat.
What to consider
  • Rachel and Rachelle are both far commoner.
  • The stress falls differently from the English Rachel.
  • The first syllable spells an English word.
