Ramin
Masculine · “Persian”
Vis and Ramin is an eleventh-century Persian romance about a queen and a young man, a nurse who arranges their meetings, a love potion, and a jealous king. Scholars have argued for a century that it reached Europe and became Tristan and Iseult. If so, the central love story of the Western Middle Ages is Persian.

The story of Ramin
The parallels between Vis o Ramin and Tristan are close: an older king, a young queen, a nephew or vassal who loves her, a confidante who manages the affair, a love potion, and a series of narrow escapes and deceptions. The Persian poem predates the earliest Tristan texts by a century, and a Georgian translation existed by the twelfth century, which gives a plausible route westward through the Caucasus and Byzantium. The argument has never been settled, since direct evidence of transmission is missing, but few scholars now think the resemblance is coincidental. What is certain is the Persian poem's own antiquity: Gorgani says he is retelling a Parthian story, which would put the material several centuries earlier again. The name has been in continuous use in Iran since, and reached the United States chiefly with Iranian arrivals after 1979.

Persian, from a root associated with joy
Ramin is the hero of the Persian romance Vis o Ramin, written by Fakhruddin Asad Gorgani around 1050 from an older Parthian story. The name is usually connected to Persian ram, joy or peace, and to Ramesh, but the derivation is not certain. It is a common modern given name in Iran, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan. It peaks in the American data in 1984.

The Aristeo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ramin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aristeo climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aristeo's path sketches the road Ramin is walking now.
Ramin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
