Aristeo
Masculine · “the best”
Aristeo is built on the Greek word for best, and behind it is a minor god with an unusually practical portfolio: Aristaeus taught men beekeeping, cheese-making and the cultivation of olives. The Spanish form of his name became an ordinary given name in Mexico and Central America, and its American peak is 1930.

The story of Aristeo
Aristaeus was a rustic deity, son of Apollo and the nymph Cyrene, credited with teaching humanity beekeeping, dairying and the olive press; Virgil tells his story at the end of the Georgics, including the episode in which he loses his bees and recovers them. Several early Christian martyrs bore the name, and it passed into Spanish as Aristeo. It is used in Mexico, particularly in the central states, and in parts of Central America. American records show it with early-twentieth-century Mexican migration and a peak in 1930, which corresponds to the largest Mexican arrival of that era.
Meaning
the best; excellent
Greek aristos means best or most excellent — the superlative behind aristocracy, 'rule by the best', and behind the name Aristotle. Aristaios is formed from it and reads as 'the excellent one'. The derivation is settled. It is worth noting that aristos in Greek carried a sense of practical excellence and standing rather than moral superiority, which suits the god's agricultural specialities.

The Verlie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aristeo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Verlie climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Verlie's path sketches the road Aristeo is walking now.
