The ending is the reason this name is recorded for both. Around the turn of the last century an -ie closing a short name said nothing about sex: Ollie, Willie, Bessie and Verlie were all in use, and some of them went to sons and some to daughters without anybody finding it odd. That ending has since become almost entirely a woman's, and names caught on the wrong side of the change look stranger now than they did.

The story of Verlie
The honest position is that nobody can say where the Ver- names came from. They surface in American registers in the later nineteenth century as a small cluster, mostly rural, mostly southern, and no European parent has ever been convincingly identified for the shortest of them. Vera is a genuine Russian name and Vernon is a genuine French place name, but neither will account for Verl or Verlie, and deriving them backwards from those is a guess dressed as an etymology. What can be described is the behavior: they appear together, they peak together, and they fade together, which is what a locally invented family of names looks like in a record.
Meaningnot established
Not established
There is no established source. Verl, Verle and Verlie appear in American records without an older name behind them, and the Ver- opening they share with Verna, Vernon and Vera may be coincidence rather than descent. Nothing here can be stated as fact.

Fashion outlook
Verlie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, easy to say and unmistakable once heard.
- The spelling follows the sound exactly with nothing to explain.
- It is genuinely rare and has no strong associations attached to it.
- There is no meaning to pass on, and any page supplying one has made it up.
- The generation that used it is now among the oldest alive.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
Nobody names a baby alone.
