The name is a place-description turned family label: someone who lived by the wet low ground, named for the ground itself, in the ordinary medieval way that produced Hill, Brook and Marsh. It settled as a surname in England and Scotland, traveled to Ulster, and came to America with Scots-Irish migration in the eighteenth century. There, as with so many Scots-Irish surnames, it slipped forward into the given-name slot — first as a mother's maiden name preserved in a son, then simply as a first name in its own right. It has stayed on the American rolls continuously ever since, never fashionable enough to date a child, never rare enough to puzzle anyone.

The reading favored by surname scholars traces Vance to Old English fenn, 'marsh, fen', through a Middle English form in which f- was voiced to v- — the same southern English shift that turned fat into vat and fixen into vixen. A second account, long held by the Vans and Vance families of Scotland and Ulster, ties the name instead to Norman de Vaux, 'of the valleys'. Both are serious; neither has closed the case.
