Osiris is the Greek way of writing an Egyptian name that was already ancient when Greek travelers first heard it — it appears in the Pyramid Texts, carved in stone in the third millennium BC. Three syllables that open wide and land on a soft hiss, with the stress in the middle: oh-SY-riss. Few names in use today can be traced back so far in continuous written record.

The story of Osiris
Osiris begins as Egyptian Wsjr, vocalized by Egyptologists as something like Usir or Asar, and named in the Pyramid Texts of the Old Kingdom as the god who dies and returns — husband of Isis, father of Horus, judge of the dead. Greek writers took the name into their own alphabet as Ὄσιρις, and Plutarch's essay 'On Isis and Osiris', written in the first and second centuries AD, preserved the fullest telling of the myth for later European readers. From Greek it passed into Latin and then into the modern languages essentially unchanged, which is why the spelling looks the same in English, French and Spanish. Its life as a given name for children is far more recent than its life as a name in books.

Not settled — the Egyptian original has been read as 'the mighty one' and as a compound of the throne and eye signs
The Egyptian name is written with the hieroglyphs for a throne and an eye, and scholars have argued for centuries over how to read them. One line of interpretation takes the signs at face value, roughly 'place/seat of the eye'; another reconstructs an underlying word meaning something like 'the mighty one' or 'he who occupies the seat'. No reading has won the argument. What is certain is who bore it: the Egyptian god of the dead, of resurrection and of the flooding Nile.

oh-SY-riss
Stress falls on the middle syllable, which rhymes with 'eye'. Spanish speakers say it oh-SEE-rees, and both are correct within their own languages. The spelling gives almost no trouble once heard.

The Nevin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Osiris's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nevin climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nevin's path sketches the road Osiris is walking now.
Osiris sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A written record running back more than four thousand years, unbroken from Egyptian into Greek, Latin and the modern languages.
- Spelled identically in English, Spanish and French, so it crosses borders without adjustment.
- Shortens easily to Ozzy or Oz, both already in ordinary use, so a short form exists without inventing one.
- Phonetic once heard: three syllables, no silent letters, no competing spellings in circulation.
- This is the name of a god, and a specific one — of death, burial and resurrection. Many people will know that, and some will say so out loud. Worth being ready with an answer you like.
- On paper it looks unmistakable, but people meeting it cold sometimes stumble on where the stress goes and try oh-SEER-iss or OSS-iris before landing on oh-SY-riss.
- Its use as a child's name in English is genuinely recent, so it reads as new here even though the name itself is not. That newness cuts both ways: little baggage, and few other bearers to point to.
