Osiris is the Egyptian god of the dead and of resurrection, and he is unambiguously male in every source that mentions him. Finding the name in the American girls' column is a reminder that mythological names travel by sound as much as by story, and that -is endings read as feminine in English regardless of what they meant elsewhere.

The story of Osiris
Osiris is one of the central figures of Egyptian religion: murdered by his brother Set, reassembled by Isis, and made ruler of the dead — the model for every Egyptian hope of an afterlife. The name entered European awareness through Greek and Roman writers and re-entered popular culture with nineteenth-century Egyptology. In modern American records it appears for boys in small numbers and for girls in smaller ones, with a 2006 peak, carried in part by Latin American families for whom classical and mythological names have a long tradition. The -is ending, shared with Alexis, Iris and Isis, is what makes the female use possible.
Meaningnot established
Greek form of an Egyptian name, meaning uncertain
Osiris is the Greek rendering of Egyptian wsjr, whose reading and meaning are both genuinely disputed by Egyptologists. Proposals include "mighty one", "place of the eye" and several others, none established. The vocalization of ancient Egyptian is itself reconstructed. Anyone offering a confident translation is going beyond what the field supports.

The Gloriana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Osiris's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gloriana climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gloriana's path sketches the road Osiris is walking now.
Osiris sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It carries one of the most substantial mythological figures available.
- The -is ending makes it work in English as a female name despite its source.
- It is instantly recognizable without being common.
- The god is male, and anyone who knows the mythology will note it.
- The meaning genuinely cannot be given; Egyptology has not settled it.
- It is closely associated with death, even though the story is about resurrection.
