The story of Gloriana
The Elizabethan name cult was a coordinated project of court poetry. Spenser gave her Gloriana as sovereign and Belphoebe as private virgin; Ralegh wrote her as Cynthia, the moon, whose tides he was ruled by; others used Astraea, the goddess of justice who left the world and would return; and Diana, the huntress. Each carried a different argument about her authority — glory, chastity, cosmic order, the golden age restored. The names circulated in verse, portraits and pageantry over four decades. Gloriana entered ordinary use much later and thinly; the American figures peak in 1930.
Meaning
Latin "glory", with a Latinate feminine ending
From Latin gloria, glory or fame, with the suffix -ana, which forms feminine names and adjectives of belonging. Edmund Spenser invented the name for the Faerie Queene of his epic, the figure who represents Elizabeth I within the poem's allegory. It has no earlier attestation and no source outside his invention, which makes it one of the small number of English names with a documented author and date.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
