Kiyan
Masculine · “kings”
Kiyan is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,160 boys against 28 girls since 1880.
Kiyan carries a title before it carries a name: in Persian it is the plural of *kay*, the word for the legendary kings of the Kayanian line who fill Ferdowsi's Shahnameh. It is two clean syllables that end open, on a vowel, the way Kian, Rayan and Aryan do. Newly arrived in American records, and climbing.

Kiyan first appears in US birth records in 1995 — 30 years ago. The typical Kiyan is a kid of about 8 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,100 people named Kiyan are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Kiyan
The Persian line is the older and the better documented: *kay* was the title of the Kayanian kings — Kay Kavus, Kay Khosrow and the rest — whose stories Ferdowsi set down in the Shahnameh around the year 1000, drawing on far older Avestan material where *kavi* meant a priest-king. Kiyan is the plural of that title, and it came into modern use as a given name in Iran and across the Persian-speaking world before traveling with families to Britain and North America. Separately, the Irish Cian — borne in early Irish literature and history — was anglicized as Kian, and that spelling drifted toward Kiyan as well. In the United States the name is newest and strongest in New York, California and Texas, the pattern of a name arriving with diaspora communities rather than a name revived from within.

"kings, royal" in Persian — or "ancient, enduring" by the Irish road
Two separate names meet at this spelling. The Persian کیان (Kiyan/Kian) is the plural of *kay*, the royal title of the Kayanian kings, and is read as "kings" or "royal, of the realm." The Irish Cian, anglicized Kian and sometimes Kiyan, is a different word entirely, meaning "ancient" or "enduring." Neither reading is doubtful in itself; which one applies depends on the family.

Pronouncing Kiyan
kee-YAHN
The Persian pronunciation stresses the second syllable: kee-YAHN. Families coming by way of the Irish Cian usually say KEE-an, with the weight in front. Both are correct for their own line, so it is worth deciding early which one you will be repeating.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Blayne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kiyan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Blayne climbed just as high around 2000, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Blayne's path sketches the road Kiyan is walking now.
Kiyan is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, five letters, no silent letters — easy to say once heard, and easy to write.
- Works in English and Persian without adaptation, and sits close to Irish Kian, so it travels across several communities.
- Short forms already exist and need no explaining: Ki, Kai, Ky.
- Rare enough in American classrooms that a child is unlikely to share it, while sounding familiar next to Kian, Rayan and Ryan.
- The spelling competes directly with Kian, which is the more common form in English-speaking countries. Expect to correct the extra y fairly often, and to see mail addressed to Kian.
- There are two live pronunciations — kee-YAHN and KEE-an — and no way to signal which you mean on paper. Most families settle it by simply saying it first and letting it stick.
- It is still very new to American records, so nearly everyone carrying it is a child. That means little in daily life, but the name has no adult generation here yet to make it feel worn in.
