Where it comes from

The story of Blayne

Blane of Kingarth was a bishop on Bute in the sixth century, and his name attached to Dunblane in Perthshire — the fort of Blane — which became a cathedral town. The surname followed from those places, and it reached America and moved to the front of the name in the twentieth century, given to sons and daughters alike. Blayne is one of the respellings that arrived with the American habit of putting a y where an i would do.

Meaningscholars disagree

yellow

Saint Blaan or Blane's name is generally read from Gaelic bla, 'yellow', with a diminutive — the little yellow one, most likely a description of hair. That reading is offered widely and is not beyond argument. A separate line takes the surname from Irish O Blathain, on blath, 'flower'. Both are real and the anglicized Blaine sits on top of them without distinguishing.

Blayne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 147 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Blayne went to 42 boys in 2025, but Blaine is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 272, which makes it the 666th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,275 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 6,280 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 40,668 for Blayne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, said correctly by everyone at first sight.
  • A documented Scottish saint and place-name behind it.
  • Short and blunt, which pairs cleanly with a long surname.
What to consider
  • Blaine is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected for life.
  • Its meaning is contested between a color and a flower, so any gloss is a choice.
  • One syllable leaves nothing to shorten and no longer form to grow into.
