Blayne is Blaine with the vowel written the long way. English has two standard ways to spell the same long A — ai in the middle and ay before a consonant or at the end — and moving between them is the single most common respelling move in American naming. It changes nothing in the mouth and everything on the page.

Where it comes from

The story of Blayne

Saint Bláán gave his name to Dunblane in Scotland and to the surname Blane, which crossed to America with Scots and Ulster-Scots migration and became a given name for boys in the twentieth century. The female entries begin in the 1980s, alongside Shane, Payton and Reagan, in the wave of Irish and Scottish surnames that crossed to girls. Blayne with the ay is the spelling that most often marks the female use, because respelling is the cheapest available way to signal sex without changing the sound.

Meaningscholars disagree

From an Irish and Scottish saint's name, possibly "yellow" or "slender"

Blaine comes from the Gaelic saint Bláán of Bute, a sixth-century figure whose name is usually connected to bla, "yellow", with a diminutive ending. A competing reading takes it from a word for thin or slender. There is also an unrelated English surname Blain from a place name. The Irish saint is the best-attested source, but the meaning under it is not settled.

Blayne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2020, with 23 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Blayne went to 16 girls in 2025, but Blaine is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 36, which makes it the 924th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,914 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 44,646 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Blayne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, immediately sayable, and impossible to get wrong out loud.
  • The Gaelic saint behind it is a genuine documented figure, not a reconstruction.
  • The ay spelling distinguishes it on paper while costing nothing in speech.
What to consider
  • Blaine is far more common and will be written by default.
  • The name is used for both sexes and skews male overall.
  • Single-syllable names give very little room for nicknames.
