Kian
Masculine · “Irish: ancient”
Kian is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 13,457 boys against 111 girls since 1880.
Kian is a short name with two long histories behind it: the Irish Cian, written down in Old Irish sources over a thousand years ago, and the Persian Kian, tied to the legendary Kayanian kings of Firdawsi's Shahnameh. Both roads arrive at the same four letters and much the same sound. In American use it is familiar enough to be read correctly on paper, yet rarely doubled up in a classroom.

From Cian (Old Irish) to Kian
The story of Kian
The Irish line begins with Cian, a name recorded in early Irish literature and genealogy, built on the ordinary Irish word for 'long' or 'enduring'. As Irish names were respelled for English-speaking record keepers, Cian became Kian, and that K-spelling carried well beyond Ireland into Britain, Australia and the United States. The Persian line is separate and just as old: Kian appears in the Shahnameh, completed around the year 1000, in connection with the Kayanian dynasty of Iranian legend, and it remains a living given name in Iran and across the diaspora. The two traditions never merged, but in American records they now share one entry — which is part of why the name turns up strongly in states with large Iranian and Irish-descended communities alike.

Irish: ancient, enduring. Persian: kings, royal
Two separate names meet at this spelling. The Old Irish Cian means 'ancient, long-lasting, enduring', and Kian is its usual anglicized spelling. The Persian کیان (Kian) belongs to the word family of kay, a title of the legendary Kayanian rulers, and is read as 'kings' or 'royal'. Which meaning applies depends on which family the name came through — and many families now know both.

Pronouncing Kian
KEE-an
Two syllables. KEE-an is the standard reading in both the Irish and the Persian traditions, though Persian speakers often place the weight on the second syllable, kee-YAAN. Some English speakers reach for KY-an by analogy with Ryan, so expect to correct that occasionally.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Donte test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Donte climbed just as high around 1997, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Donte's path sketches the road Kian is walking now.
Kian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two syllables, and no silent parts — easy to write early and easy to say in most languages.
- Belongs to two living traditions at once, Irish and Persian, so it reads as a real name in a wide range of families.
- The K-spelling is the established English form of Irish Cian, so it is not a modern invention needing explanation.
- Sits comfortably beside the familiar Liam and Ryan sound patterns without duplicating them.
- The KEE-an versus KY-an split is real and will not resolve itself. Deciding which one your family uses, and saying it first when you introduce him, saves most of the trouble.
- Cian, Kian and Kiaan all circulate, so spelling will need to be given aloud fairly often — a small, lifelong task rather than a problem.
- This name's wave is very recent, so a Kian will meet few adults who share it. That means fewer mix-ups, and also fewer people who already know how to spell it.
