Our story of Jared
The Book of Enoch is not in most Bibles and was enormously influential anyway. It takes the line in Genesis about the sons of God coming down to earth and expands it into a full narrative: two hundred rebellious angels who descend, teach humans metalwork, cosmetics, astrology and weapons, father a race of giants, and are punished for it. The book specifies that this happened in the days of Jared, and it reads the name itself as the word for descent, treating the genealogy as a coded record of the event. The text survives complete only in Ethiopian, where it is canonical, and it shaped a great deal of later angelology that its readers assumed was scriptural.
