The story of Lloyd
The coffee house model was a genuine information system. Lloyd's advantage was location and diligence: he collected news of arrivals and losses, published it, and provided the room where underwriters wrote their names under the terms of a risk — which is where the word underwriter comes from. The market moved premises several times and became an institution with a bell taken from a wrecked frigate, rung once for bad news and twice for good. Nobody has run a coffee house there for three hundred years and the name has not moved an inch.
Meaning
grey
The Welsh word means grey, and by extension something like venerable or holy — it was a nickname for grey hair before it was a surname. The doubled letter at the front is a single Welsh letter representing a sound English does not have; the two written ls are not two sounds, and no English speaker attempts what the Welsh spelling is actually asking for.

The Lee test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lloyd's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lee climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lee's path sketches the road Lloyd is walking now.
Lloyd sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
