The story of Cypress
Ovid tells of Cyparissus, a boy who accidentally killed a stag he loved and asked to mourn forever; Apollo turned him into the tree. Cypresses have stood in Mediterranean cemeteries ever since. Tree word-names rose in American naming from the 2000s alongside Aspen, Rowan and Juniper, and Cypress appears in the registers in the 2010s.
Meaning
cypress tree
From the Greek kyparissos, a pre-Greek word of unrecovered origin, through the Latin cupressus. The tree was sacred to the underworld gods and planted at tombs because a cut cypress does not sprout again. The English word is ordinary and the botanical reference undisputed.
