The story of Cypress
Ovid's Cyparissus accidentally kills a beloved stag and asks to mourn forever, and Apollo turns him into the tree — which is why cypresses stand in Mediterranean cemeteries. The word came into Greek from an older Mediterranean language nobody has identified. Cypress appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
cypress tree
From the Greek kyparissos, borrowed from a pre-Greek Mediterranean language, through the Latin cupressus. The island of Cyprus and the tree share the word, though which named which is disputed. The Greek is documented; its own source is not.

The Janan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cypress's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Janan climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Janan's path sketches the road Cypress is walking now.
Cypress sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
