The story of Janan
Arabic builds its words from roots of three consonants, and the root j-n-n carries the idea of covering or hiding. From it come janna, a garden hidden by its own foliage and the word for paradise; the jinn, beings hidden from sight; majnun, 'possessed', literally 'covered by jinn'; and janan, the heart, the self hidden inside. Persian has its own jānān, 'beloved', and Turkish writes that word Canan and uses it as a girl's name. The American record holds Janan mostly for girls, with a few boys, and it does not say which of these roads, or a simple joining of Jan and Ann, any family took.

Arabic 'heart, soul', or Persian 'beloved'
Arabic janān means 'heart' or 'soul'. Persian jānān, from jān, 'life, soul', means 'beloved' and is common in Persian and Urdu poetry. Some American Janans of the middle of the century may instead be a blend of Jan and Ann; the record does not say which road a particular family took.
Pronouncing Janan
jah-NAHN
Arabic and Persian speakers stress the second syllable; English speakers often say JAN-un. Settle on one early.

Fashion outlook
Janan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Real meanings in two languages: 'heart' in Arabic and 'beloved' in Persian.
- Short, easy to spell and hard to misread.
- Recorded for both girls and boys, so it is not locked to either.
- The American record holds the spelling mostly for girls, with a few boys; a boy called Janan will often be taken for a girl on paper, and a girl may be taken for Janet or Jan.
- Two pronunciations, JAN-un and jah-NAHN, both circulate; choose one and say it early.
- Janan and Jinan are close but different words in Arabic; a family that wants 'garden' should look at Jinan.
