The story of Chevy
The Ballad of Chevy Chase survives from the fifteenth century and tells of an English hunting party on Scottish ground that ends in slaughter; Sidney said it moved him more than a trumpet. The name reached American use through the ballad, the Maryland town named for it, and a comic actor. Chevy appears in the American registers rising in the 2010s.

of the Cheviot Hills
From Chevy Chase, a contraction of 'Cheviot chase' — a hunt on the hills between England and Scotland. The Cheviot name itself is unrecovered, probably pre-English. The car marque is a shortening of Chevrolet, a Swiss-French surname, and is a separate word entirely.

The Cornel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chevy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cornel climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cornel's path sketches the road Chevy is walking now.
Chevy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
