Our story of Chevy
Follow the word and it goes a long way. A Northumbrian ballad about a hunt on the Cheviot Hills, printed by 1500 and known to Sir Philip Sidney, who said it stirred him like a trumpet. A Maryland land grant named for the ballad, which became a town, which became the given name of a comedian born Cornelius Crane Chase in 1943. And separately Louis Chevrolet, who founded a car company in 1911 that Americans have called Chevy for a century. When a family writes Chevy on a birth certificate in 2015, the ballad and the town are almost certainly not what they had in mind, and the truck almost certainly is. That is a fair thing to note and not a fair thing to be snobbish about: word names have always come from whatever was in front of people.

A chase, a hunt
The Ballad of Chevy Chase describes a hunt on the Cheviot Hills that becomes a battle between the Percys and the Douglases; chevy is generally read as a chase or pursuit and Cheviot as the hills themselves, whose own name is unexplained. Chevy Chase in Maryland took its name from a land grant named for the ballad. The car is a shortening of Chevrolet, the surname of the Swiss-born racing driver Louis Chevrolet. All three uses feed the modern name.

The Joshlyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chevy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Joshlyn climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Joshlyn's path sketches the road Chevy is walking now.
Chevy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
