Aizen
Masculine · “Japanese”
Aizen is a Japanese word-name written in more than one way: 愛染, the name of Aizen Myō-ō, a fierce red-bodied figure of esoteric Buddhism, and 藍染, the craft of indigo dyeing. In English it lands as two clean syllables closing on -en, the ending already worn smooth by Aiden and Jayden, with the word Zen sitting whole inside it.

Aizen first appears in US birth records in 2007 — 18 years ago. The typical Aizen is a kid of about 4 — this name's wave is very recent. About 1,900 people named Aizen are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Aizen
Aizen Myō-ō entered Japan with the esoteric Shingon and Tendai schools in the ninth century, a Buddhist figure depicted red-skinned and crowned with a lion, whose written name joins the character for love to the character for dyeing cloth. The homophone 藍染, indigo dyeing, is an ordinary Japanese craft word and also a surname, carried by the principal antagonist of the manga and anime series Bleach, which reached English-language audiences in the mid-2000s. Aizen's appearance in American birth records begins in that same stretch of years and has been building since. A separate line reaches the spelling from Eastern Europe, where the Jewish surname Eisen was transliterated through Cyrillic as Aizen.

Japanese, from characters for dyeing: 愛染 'love-dyed' or 藍染 'indigo-dyed'
Two Japanese writings sound identical. 愛染 (love + dye) belongs to Aizen Myō-ō, the Buddhist deity known in Sanskrit as Rāgarāja; 藍染 (indigo + dye) is the older craft word and the surname form. Separately, Aizen and Ayzen are Slavic-script spellings of the Ashkenazi surname Eisen, Yiddish and German for 'iron' — a different road entirely to the same five letters.
Pronouncing Aizen
AY-zen
AY-zen is the usual English reading and the one used in the English dub of Bleach. Japanese puts the vowels closer to 'ah-ee', giving something nearer eye-ZEN, and both turn up among families in the US. Expect to state your preference once and then be understood.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Macario test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aizen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Macario climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Macario's path sketches the road Aizen is walking now.
Aizen is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Five letters, two syllables, no silent letters — easy to write early and easy to read aloud on a first attempt.
- Ends in -en like Aiden, Kayden and Jayden, so it sounds familiar in an American classroom while remaining its own name.
- Carries a ready-made short form in Zen, which also stands alone as a given name.
- Reaches the same spelling by two independent routes, Japanese and Ashkenazi, so more than one family can find their own history in it.
- Documented in Japanese as a written word with a long religious and craft history, not a recent coinage.
- Anyone who has watched Bleach will hear the antagonist's surname first. That association is strong among people now in their twenties and thirties, and it fades or holds depending on who your child is standing next to.
- AY-zen and eye-ZEN both circulate. Choose the one you want and say it plainly at introductions, because neither is wrong and people will guess.
- The name is very new to American records and still uncommon, so there is no long local track record to lean on — and a child will likely be the only Aizen in the building.
- Expect Aiden, Aizen and Ayzen to be confused on forms and rosters; the letter z is what people will need repeating.
