Ramiro
Masculine · “famous counsel”
Ramiro is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 25,930 boys against 28 girls since 1880.
Ramiro comes down from the Visigoths who ruled Spain after Rome, worn smooth by Spanish and Portuguese mouths into three even syllables. Medieval kings carried it — Ramiro I of Asturias in the ninth century, Ramiro II of León, Ramiro II of Aragón, the one they called the Monk — and it left a permanent mark on the language: the surname Ramírez simply means "son of Ramiro." It has never gone away, and it has never been everywhere.

The story of Ramiro
The Goths brought their names into Iberia in the fifth century, and Latin scribes wrote them down as best they could: Ranimirus, later shortened to Ramirus. From there Spanish and Galician-Portuguese speech pared it to Ramiro. It became a royal name in the small Christian kingdoms of the north — Asturias, León, Aragón — and stayed a common Iberian given name long after those kingdoms merged, throwing off the patronymic Ramírez along the way. It reached the United States mainly through Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, which is why it remains best represented in Texas, California and Florida.

The Blair test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ramiro's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Blair climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- Spelled exactly as it sounds in both Spanish and English, with no competing variants to correct.
- A documented record stretching from Visigothic Iberia through the medieval kings of Asturias, León and Aragón to the present day.
- The surname Ramírez, which means "son of Ramiro," makes the sound already familiar to American ears.
- Works unchanged in Spanish, Portuguese, Galician and Italian — useful in a bilingual family.
- A steady presence across generations rather than a fashion spike, so it is not tied to any one decade.
- Short forms are not well established in English. Rami and Miro both get used, but a child may simply go by the full name, which is fine and also worth knowing in advance.
- English speakers sometimes hear Ramírez, or reach for Ramón or Rodrigo instead. Expect a gentle correction now and then.
- Outside the states where it is strongest, a Ramiro is likely to be the only one in a school — welcome to some families, a little conspicuous to others.
