Where it comes from

The story of Ramiah

The Hebrew Bible contains several hundred names that occur exactly once, in a genealogy, a census or a list of officials, and they have no story attached to them at all. Modern English-speaking parents have been mining that stock steadily since the 1990s, because it supplies names that are unmistakably biblical and yet carried by nobody anyone has heard of. Ramiah is one of them, taken from the list in Ezra 10, and its use in the United States is very recent, with a best year of 2004. It also reads as a modern-style coinage, which is part of why it works.

Meaningscholars disagree

the Lord has set or exalted

Hebrew Ramyah combines a verb from the root r-w-m, to be high or to raise, with yah, the shortened divine name, giving the Lord has exalted or the Lord has set on high. A competing parsing from a different root meaning to cast or throw is also proposed. Like most Hebrew names it is a complete sentence rather than a word.

Ramiah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 32 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ramiah went to 17 girls in 2025, but Ramiyah, Ramya and Ramiya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 85, which makes it the 875th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,671 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 18,909 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Ramiah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuinely biblical name with a settled sentence-meaning behind it.
  • Rami and Mia are two short forms with independent lives.
  • Sounds entirely modern while being three thousand years old.
What to consider
  • The biblical bearer appears only in a list, with no story attached.
  • The list in question is about dissolving marriages, which some readers will know.
  • Two pronunciations circulate and the spelling does not settle between them.
