English is unusually rich in homophones with different spellings, and the reason is that it borrowed heavily from French and Latin while keeping its Germanic core. Rain, reign and rein is a clean set: a native word, a Latin word through French, and a different Latin word through French, all arriving at the same sound by different routes and all spelled to reflect their origins rather than their pronunciation. The same happened to right, rite, write and wright, which are four separate words: a Germanic adjective, a Latin noun, a Germanic verb and a Germanic occupational noun. English spelling is often criticized for irrationality, but in cases like these it is doing something useful, since the spellings carry the distinction the sound has lost. A phonetic reform would make these words identical on paper as well as in speech.
