The story of Rainy
The weather names appear in American records mostly after 1950 and belong to the same current that produced Autumn, Summer, Sky, Dawn and Star. Several of them arrived through fiction or film first: Misty from a 1961 novel and film about a pony, Stormy from a range of sources. Rainy has no single origin of that kind and appears to have been reached directly from the word. It has always been rare, and its peak in 1998 sits in a period when nature words generally were fashionable. In much of the world a rainy season is the good one, which is worth saying, because English-speaking assumptions about rain are not universal.
Meaning
characterized by rain
Old English regn is the ancestor of rain and one of the oldest words in the language, with relations across every Germanic tongue — German Regen, Dutch regen, Old Norse regn. The adjective rainy is formed with the ordinary English -y suffix. Nothing about the derivation is contested. As a name it may also be a respelling of Rainey, a genuine Irish and Scottish surname from a personal name related to Ragnar, which is a different word entirely.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Zanna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rainy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Zanna climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Zanna's path sketches the road Rainy is walking now.
Rainy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
