Jania
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Jania sits between two readings, and both are ordinary. It can be Jana or Jane with an extra syllable, which makes it part of the enormous John family; or it can be Ja- plus -nia, built the way Zania and Tania were in the same decades. Its American peak is 2005, which is squarely inside the second reading's era.

The story of Jania
Jana has been a standard name across Central Europe and the Netherlands for centuries, and it reached America with those migrations and again with the general fashion for short vowel-heavy names in the 1970s. Separately, the -nia ending was one of the most productive in American girls' naming from about 1985: it produced Tania, Zania, Kenia, Anaya and Jania, always with the stress in the middle and the ending unstressed. The two currents met in the same spelling. That happens frequently in American naming, and it usually means the same name was chosen by different families for entirely different reasons.
Meaningscholars disagree
'God is gracious', if it descends from Jane
The Jana route is genuine: Jana is the feminine of Jan, which is John in Czech, Polish, Dutch and German, so it descends from Hebrew Yohanan, 'Yahweh is gracious'. Jania would be an extension of that. The alternative is the American Ja- prefix joined to -nia, an ending in wide use in the 1990s and 2000s on Zania, Tania and Anaya. Both are plausible for the same five letters and the record cannot separate them.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jania went to 20 girls in 2025, but Janiyah, Janiya and Janiah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 8 spellings went to 544, which makes it the 494th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,423 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,955 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 80,363 for Jania itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back.
