The story of Saloma
Two Salomes appear in the New Testament, and they have been thoroughly confused with each other in popular memory. One is among the women at the crucifixion and the empty tomb, named in Mark. The other, unnamed in the Gospels but identified by Josephus, is the daughter of Herodias who dances before Herod and asks for the head of John the Baptist. Christian naming took up the first and had to live with the second, which is why the name has an ambiguous reputation it does not deserve. Anabaptist communities in Switzerland and the Palatinate used Saloma steadily, brought it to Pennsylvania in the eighteenth century, and have kept it in use ever since; the American record for it is concentrated in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.
Meaning
peace
Hebrew shalom, Aramaic shlama, is the ordinary word for peace, wholeness and wellbeing — the greeting and the concept together. Shlomit and Shelomith are Hebrew feminine forms, and Greek rendered the name Salome. Solomon comes from the same root. The derivation is settled; the only variation is which language's form a particular spelling came through.
