The story of Kimberlynn
The South African town of Kimberley was named in 1873 for the Earl of Kimberley, then Colonial Secretary, whose title came from the Norfolk place. Diamonds had been found there in 1871, the Big Hole became the largest hand-dug excavation in the world, and the Siege of Kimberley in 1899-1900 was one of the most reported episodes of the Boer War. That reporting is what put the word into general English-speaking circulation. American use as a girls' name began in the 1940s, exploded in the 1960s to reach the top five, and has declined since. Kimberlynn belongs to the later respelling phase, when the -lynn ending was being added to almost anything.
