The story of Bronwen
Branwen, the raven-named one, is the center of the second branch of the Mabinogi. She is married to the king of Ireland to seal a peace, is insulted, and is set to work in the kitchens and struck daily. She raises a starling, teaches it to speak, and sends it across the sea to her brother Bendigeidfran with a message; he brings an army, and the war destroys both kingdoms. Seven men return, carrying her brother's severed head, which continues to talk to them for eighty years. Branwen dies of grief on the bank of the Alaw in Anglesey. The tale is one of the oldest pieces of Welsh prose and its central image, a woman training a bird to carry a message because no other route is open to her, is among the most memorable in medieval European literature.
Meaning
Welsh bron and gwen, fair breast
Bronwen joins Welsh bron, a breast or the slope of a hill, to gwen, the feminine of gwyn, white, fair or blessed. It is distinct from Branwen, which begins with bran, a raven or a crow, though the two names are routinely merged in reference books. The American peak is 1947.

The Seretha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Bronwen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Seretha climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Seretha's path sketches the road Bronwen is walking now.
