Londa
Feminine
Londa is a name the records cannot account for. It appears in American use in the early twentieth century without an obvious parent, and the candidates are all plausible and none provable: the tail of Yolanda, the tail of Rolanda, a feminine built on Lon, a respelling of Lonna. It is a small name with a large question behind it, and the honest thing to do is set out the candidates rather than pick one.
How old is the name Londa?

From Yolande in medieval France and Aragon to Londa
Our story of Londa
The likeliest single parent is Yolanda, and Yolanda is worth knowing about for its own sake. The medieval form of it belonged to Yolande of Aragon, who is one of the most consequential people of the fifteenth century and one of the least famous. She was the mother-in-law of the French king, she held Anjou and Provence, she financed the campaign that put him on the throne, and when a farm girl from Domremy turned up with a plan, it was Yolande who had her examined, vouched for her, and paid for the army she rode with. Contemporaries called her the queen of four kingdoms. Her name spread across southern Europe and eventually reached America, where American naming did to it what American naming does to long names: kept a piece and let the rest go. Whether that is where this name came from cannot be proved, but it is the road that fits the letters best.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Each candidate parent carries a different meaning and none of them can be assigned to this name with any confidence. Yolanda goes back through medieval French to a name whose connection to the violet is itself a guess. Rolanda is a feminine of a Germanic compound about fame and land. Lon is a short form of several unrelated names. There is no evidence in the spelling to choose between them, and no family tradition survives in the records to settle it.
How the name formed
- Yolande in medieval France and Aragon
- Yolanda across southern Europe and Latin America

- Londa in the registers without a traceable parent

Fashion outlook
Londa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, easy and completely unambiguous once heard, which not many rare names manage.
- It rhymes with several familiar names, so it feels known even though it is not.
- It has no fashionable associations at all, which for some families is exactly the appeal.
- There is no meaning and no confirmed parent name, so a child who asks gets a list rather than an answer.
- It will be heard as Rhonda or Wanda on introduction more often than it is heard correctly.
