Orien
Masculine
Orien is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 545 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
Orion is the one constellation that looks like what it is called. Three stars in a row make a belt, four corners make shoulders and knees, a line of faint stars hangs below the belt as a sword. Every culture that watched the sky picked it out, and the Greek name may not be Greek at all: it may be a version of a Babylonian one.

The story of Orien
The Babylonians cataloged this constellation as the Shepherd of Anu, and their star lists were copied and transmitted westward for centuries, which is why several Greek constellation names look like translations of Mesopotamian ones. Whether Orion is one of them is argued: the sound correspondence with Uru-anna is suggestive and not conclusive. What is certain is the antiquity of the figure. Orion is mentioned in Homer and in Hesiod, in the book of Job, which names it alongside the Pleiades, and in Egyptian material where the same stars are identified with Osiris. It is also the constellation used across the world for timing agricultural work, because its rising and setting mark the seasons at low latitudes as reliably as anything in the sky. The name reached English as a poetic word and became a personal name in the nineteenth century.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Greek Orion is a hunter of myth and a constellation, and the origin of the word is not established. It has been connected to Greek ouron, urine, through a crude folk etymology in the myth, and to the Akkadian Uru-anna, light of heaven, which is the Babylonian name for the same star group. Neither is secure. Orien is a spelling variant used in American records; it peaks in 1903.
