Where it comes from

The story of Octavious

The gens Octavia was an unremarkable Italian family until one of its members was adopted by Julius Caesar and became Augustus, the first Roman emperor; his sister Octavia married Mark Antony. The number names — Quintus for a fifth child, Sextus for a sixth — were in ordinary use, and Octavius belongs to that system. The name reached America chiefly through the classical revival of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and had a second and larger life from the 1970s in African American families, where Octavius, Octavia and the -ius names generally were widely used. Octavious is a respelling from that later period, peaking in 1992.

Meaning

Eighth

From Latin octavus, eighth, from octo, eight. Octavius was a Roman gens name built on that numeral, and the reading is settled. The -ious spelling is an American variant of Octavius influenced by names like Demetrius and Aurelius; Latin has only the -ius form.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, simple and connects to a whole Roman naming system.
  • Tavi and Tay both work as short forms.
  • It carries the first Roman emperor without being his imperial name.
What to consider
  • Octavius is the standard spelling and will be written for it.
  • Four syllables is long for American paperwork.
  • The meaning is a number, which some find plain and others find odd.
