Where it comes from

Our story of Nelda

Our story of Nelda begins in a decade when the -da ending was doing a great deal of work. Linda was climbing toward the top of the chart, Glenda and Rhonda and Wanda were all in the same registers, and a name that borrowed the front of Nell and the ending of all of them would sound established the first time it was spoken. It went down on certificates across the American South from the 1930s, peaked in the middle of the 1940s, and left no explanation behind it.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No established origin. It is generally read as Nell — itself from Ellen or Eleanor by a medieval rebracketing — plus the -da ending that Linda, Wanda, Glenda and Rhonda all carry. It has also been connected to an Old English word for an elder tree, but that reading is not supported by anything in the record.
