The story of Montrez
Tautological place names arise when a name is borrowed by speakers who no longer understand it and then explained with a word from their own language. The River Avon uses the Brittonic word for a river. The Sahara is the Arabic word for a desert. Lake Michigan uses an Ojibwe phrase meaning great water. Faroe Islands contains the Old Norse for islands. Los Angeles Angels once played at a stadium whose name meant the the angels angels field. Torpenhow in Cumbria is the standard extreme case, combining a Brittonic word for a hill, a Cumbric one, and an Old Norse one, and local usage has sometimes added Hill on the end. The mechanism is the same each time: a name arrives opaque, and the receiving language supplies a category word to make it usable.

The Alcides test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Montrez's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alcides climbed just as high around 1966, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alcides's path sketches the road Montrez is walking now.
Montrez sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
