Where it comes from

The story of Mickel

Old English micel means much or great and survives as Scots and northern English mickle; muckle is a variant of the same word. The genuine proverb, recorded from the fifteenth century, is many a little makes a mickle, meaning that small amounts accumulate into a large one, which is sensible. The garbled version, many a mickle makes a muckle, appears in the eighteenth century, is often attributed to George Washington, and says that many large things make a large thing, which is not advice. The corruption has been pointed out repeatedly for two hundred years and has entirely displaced the original in popular use. It is a good illustration of what happens to a proverb containing a word people no longer know: the shape survives, the sense does not, and nobody notices because the shape is what gets repeated.

Hebrew, who is like God?

Mickel is a respelling of Michael, Hebrew Mikha'el, a rhetorical question meaning who is like God. It coincides with the English dialect word mickle, from Old English micel, meaning much or great, which is unrelated. The peak of this spelling is 1953.

Mickel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1957, with 54 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mickel went to 7 boys in 2025, but Mikel, Mykel and Mikkel and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 196, which makes it the 733rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 8,981 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 8,715 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Mickel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
