Basque names were illegal in Spain for most of the twentieth century. Under Franco a child could not be registered with one — the civil registry accepted Spanish forms only — and families who wanted a Basque name for a son used it at home and wrote Miguel on the paperwork. The law changed in the 1970s and the names came back within a decade.

The story of Mikel
The ban was part of a wider suppression: the language was banned in schools, in print and on signs, and a generation grew up unable to write it. What is striking is how quickly the naming recovered. Registers from the late 1970s onwards show Basque forms returning in large numbers, and by the 1990s they dominated in the Basque provinces — a naming stock that had been driven underground for forty years reappearing almost intact, because families had gone on using it in the kitchen the whole time.
Meaning
who is like God?
Mikel is the Basque form of Michael, and the Hebrew name behind it is a rhetorical question. In the American record this spelling is at least as likely to be Michael respelled by an English-speaking family, since it is a plain phonetic version of the same sounds. The two possibilities produce identical letters and the record does not separate them.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mikel went to 81 boys in 2025, but Mykel, Mikkel and Mykell and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 196, which makes it the 733rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,186 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 8,715 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 21,087 for Mikel itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Durward test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mikel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Durward climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Durward's path sketches the road Mikel is walking now.
Mikel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- The two pronunciations are quite different and he will hear both.
- Michael and Michel will both be written instead, regularly.
- It reads as a misspelling to Americans who do not know the Basque form.
