Where it comes from

The story of Hendrick

Henry Hudson — Hendrick Hudson in the Dutch records that employed him — sailed into the river in 1609 looking for a passage to Asia, and was set adrift by his own crew two years later in the bay that also carries his name. Dutch settlement brought Hendrick to New Netherland, and it is in current American use.

Meaning

home-ruler

From the Germanic haim, 'home' or 'estate', and ric, 'ruler' or 'power'. The compound describes authority over a household or a domain rather than a kingdom. Dutch made Hendrik and Hendrick from the Latin Henricus. Both elements are ordinary and the reading is undisputed.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Hendrick went to 81 boys in 2025, but Hendrik is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 131, which makes it the 797th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,122 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 13,039 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 21,087 for Hendrick itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent and the royal record runs back to the Frankish court.
  • Hank is available as a short form that came into English from the Dutch.
  • A river, a bay and a strait all carry the name of one bearer.
What to consider
  • Hendrik without the c is the standard Dutch spelling.
  • Henry is the form English speakers will assume.
  • It reads as distinctly Dutch or Afrikaans.
