Where it comes from

The story of Maudie

Matilda came to England with the Conqueror's wife and was carried by queens for two centuries, but the spoken form went its own way: Mahalt, then Maud. Victorian England revived Maud deliberately, helped by a widely read narrative poem of 1855, and American families added the affectionate -ie that they were adding to everything in that period. Maudie was registered as a legal name and peaked around 1890.

Meaning

mighty in battle

Through Maud and Matilda, from the Germanic maht, 'might', and hild, 'battle'. Both halves are ordinary words and the compound is transparent — the kind of pairing Frankish and Saxon nobility built their names from.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Maud and Matilda are both available as formal forms with very deep records.
  • Warm and immediately affectionate, which the parent forms are not.
  • The meaning is transparent and both elements are documented.
What to consider
  • It is unmistakably a nineteenth-century American name and carries that period plainly.
  • As a diminutive it stays informal unless Maud is on the certificate.
